New Delhi: Three meat shops owned by member of the Muslim community in Hathras,Uttar Pradesh, has been burned down to ashes by some unidentified miscreants later on Wednesday, trying to create imbalance in the atmosphere of the newly settled UP state.
This comes days after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in the state and promised action against illegal abattoirs.A number of establishments operating without licenses have been shut down or been sealed by the government ever since.
The owners of the Hathras shops have not filed a complaint so far.
Police is trying to identify the miscreants who were behind the incident, tensions over the issue has been seen in the area. "There are no eyewitnesses to what happened since the shops caught fire at night," the district superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar said. "Investigations are on to find out how the fire was started," he said.
The states new chief minister 44-year old priest Adityanath, has long campaigned against the meat industry as part of his hardline Hindutva policies. This has resulted in multiple orders to the Uttar Pradesh Police to be stricter on cattle transporters and slaughterhouses soon after the government was sworn in n March 15.
