MUMBAI: Mustafa Dossa, one of the convict in the Mumbai 1993 serial blasts passed away today due to cardiac arrest after being admitted to hospital for hypertension and diabetes. He was lodged in Arthour Road jail.

Dossa was admitted to JJ Hospital after the complained of chest pain.

"Dossa was admitted to the jail ward of the hospital at 3 am," Hospital dean TP Lahane said.

Dossa complained of chest pain and had uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes and infection, he said.

Yesterday, the CBI had sought capital punishment for Dossa, arguing that his role in the blast was "more severe" than that of hanging convict Yakub Menon.

According to the CBI, Dossa was one of the "brains" behind the conspiracy and that his degree of responsibility towards the commission of the crime was the highest.

On June 16, the court in the second leg of the trail of the blast convicted five accused , including Dossa and extradited gangster Abu Salem, under the charges of murder, conspiracy and sections of now repealed TADA, while the sixth accused Riyaz Siddiqui was convicted only under TADA Act.

A total of 257 people were massacred in the co-ordinates blasts that ripped through the city on March 12, 1993.

However, the court has acquitted Abdul Quayyum of all charges, one of the seven accused arrested during the time of the blast.

The trail of the seven accused - Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Karimullah Khan, Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui, Tahir Merchant and Abdul Quayyu, - was separated from the main case as they were arrested at the time of conclusion of the main trail.
