Modi reminds US the importance of the Indian IT sectors

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the US Congress delegation on Tuesday urging the United States to develope a "reflective, balanced and farsighted perspective on movement of skilled professionals."

This is the first delegation of the US Congress to visit India after Trump formed government and his announcement to make H1B visa norms more stringent created tremors in the IT sector that sends a lot of Indians abroad to work with their partners.

The Prime Minister's Office in a statement said a bi-partisan delegation of 26 members of the US Congress jointly called on Mr Modi. Prime Minister referred to the role of skilled Indian talented in enriching the American economy and society.The statement quoted him as saying "It augurs a good start to bilateral exchanges following the new U.S. Administration and Congress."

Prime Minister Modi and President Trump are yet to have a personal meeting and had only a telephonic conversation earlier this month.

While eight of the visiting American lawmakers had on Monday discussed with the Commerce and Industry Ministry, issue including the proposed US work visa curbs that could impact the $110 billion Indian IT sectors, as well as issues concerning intellectual property rights (IPRs) and market access of certain farm products. While India took up its IT sectors concerns on the products on the proposed restrictions on the US non-immigrant visa for foreign skilled workers, the Amercn lawmakers lead by Bob Goodlatte, chairman, Judiciary committee, House of Representative raised concerns on IPR issues including the need to strengthen copyright norms and provisions to encourage and protect innovation, the source said. The delegation will be proceeding to Hyderabad, after New Delhi.
