Mass jail break: 17 shot dead while escaping Papua New Guinea prison

New Delhi: At least, seventeen prisoner's have been shot down after a mass breakout at a jail in Papua New Guinea, on Monday, with 57 prisoner still on the loose, said a report.

Inmates of the Buimo jail in the Pacific nation's is the second largest city Lae made dash after freedom after breaking out of their compound on Friday, with prison warders opening fire. Guinea police confirmed 17 were killed, three caught and 57 are still at large.

Lae police metropolitan commander Chief Superintendent Anthony Wagmbie Jr said of the escapees, warning the public to stay vigilant. "These are undesirable people and will be threat to the community."

"The majority of those who escape were arrested for serious crimes and were in custody awaiting trail. A good number were arrested by police last year for mainly armed robberies, car thefts, break and enter and stealing," he added.

Last year, in the same prison police shot dead 12 inmates during a jailbreak.

Crime and lawlessness is still common in Papua New Guniea, a sprawling nation where many still live traditional and subsistence lives in remote areas is now unstable.

While, Mr Wagambie urged the family members of the escapees not to shelter them. "I am warning them that they will be caught. They must do what is good for the, and surrender," he said.
