RIYADH: Saudi King Salman on Wednesday named his son Mohammed bin Salman as crown prince, completing a gradual removal of powers from the previous prince Mohammed bin Nayef, 57, who has been fired. He was known for his counterterrorism and the last of the generation of leaders who build the modern kingdom, transforming it from a poor desert backwater into a enormous oil wealth.
According the royal decrees ordered by the official Saudia Press Agency, Mohammed bin Salman, 31,w as also named deputy prime minister, and maintains post as minister of defence.
The newly announced Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman already oversees a vast portfolio as defense minister and head of economic council tasked with overhauling the country's economy. He has already been second-in-line to the throne as deputy crown prince, though royal watchers had long suspected his rise to power under his father's regime might also accelerate his ascension to the throne.
The young prince was little known to Saudis and outsiders before Salman became king in January 2015. He had previously been in charge of his father's royal court when Salman was the prince. The Saudi king has awarded his son expensive powers to the surprise of many within the royal family who are more senior and more experience than Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS.
