Paris: Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed meeting - French President Emmanuel Macron today to go "above and beyond" the Paris Agreement and Climate change, after the US said it would quit the deal.
US President Donald Trump had announced to withdraw from the deal two days ago on curbing carbon emissions, PM Modi said it was "part of the world's shared heritage" and that India would "continue working... above and beyond the Paris accord."
When US announced its withdrawal, Trump complained that India, which is the world's largest carbon emitter after China and the US "will be able to double its coal production 2020".
India is on the course to exceed the renewable energy targets it set itself i 2015 with prices of wind and solar energy reaching record lows last month and has cancelled coal projects.
"It is our common responsibility to protect the Earth, our mother planet." Modi said while addressing the media. "For me the Indian people, the protection of our planet's environment is an article of faith."
During the two hour talk that encompassed trade, defence and the anti-terror fight,President Macron said PM Modi and he had "mainly discussed our commitment to the climate".
"I want to restate here France's full commitment to the fight against climate warming," siad the president reacting on Trumps Thursday announcement with memorable call to "make the planet great again" - a play on President Trump's pledge to "make America great again" that has been shared by tens of thousands of Twitter users.
