COLOMBO: At least 16 people died in a accident caused by the massive mountain of dump collapsing to the ground in Meethotamulla yesterday, during the celebration of the traditional New Year in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Twelve others were injured when the garbage collapsed. While, more than 600 people fled their houses in the poor neighborhood of Meetotamulla, just outside the capital Colombo.

People are being sheltered in a nearby school, the Country's Disaster Management Center said.

Some admitted into a nearby hospital included, six females and four males among the dead. Further, among those killed in the tragedy were 13-year-old boy and two female students aged 15 and 16 years.

The Sri Lankan army is conducting rescue operations managed to save the lives of three persons trapped beneath the collapsed buildings.

It has been estimated that the collapsed section of the garbage dump is around 800 meters.

Meanwhile, residents had set fire to the blackhole that stationed at the garbage dump.

The site was being used to dump Colombo's garbage for the past few years as authorities give a face-lift to the capital.

The residents living in the area had staged protest last month urging the authorities to remove the garbage dump from there and also accused the MP, S M Marikkar of not paying attention to the problem.

They also made it clear that the citizens are facing many health hazards due to the garbage dump.
