Centre cant impose beef ban on states: BJP

Tahlka New Bureau

Shilong: BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli, who is in-charge of the party affair's in Meghalaya, said on Wednesday the Centre cannot impose the ban on cow slaughter on states as it is against the Constitution. The comment assumes significance as the BJP's Meghalaya unit has views divergent to its central leadership since its local leaders eat beef.

The BJP is saying this clearly in a state on cow slaughter is to be decided by the state and not the Centre," Kohli told reporters in Shilong when asked about his party's position on the North Eastern states where majority of people consumes beef.

"The notification does not mention a word about beef ban and it was issues after the Supreme Court asked the Centre to make rules on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act.

The BJP leader blames the Congress "trick department" for spreading the roumers about beef ban. "BJP has no agenda except development and the Congress government does not want to speak on the topic of its track record as a government. They are trying to communalise it and create false propaganda on social media," he said adding that most of the reports on social media are fabricated.

Kohli interestingly mentioned that the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act was brought in by the Congress in 1960 and "we are being blamed for this".

Last week, the Centre banned sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter and the move was severely criticised by political parties as well as NGOs in the state.
