Daughter of Kargil Martyr Gets Rape Threats On Social Media After Taking On ABVP

New Delhi: Guemehar Kaur, the daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Sigh and a student of Lady Shri Ram College , landed in eye of social media storm on Monday after she started a campaign against the Bhartiya Janata Party's (BJP) student organization Akhil Bhartiya Parishad (ABVP) went viral recently.

Kaur approached Delhi Commission for Women (DWC) on Monday and filed a written complaint after receiving offensive comments and "rape threats on social media". The commission is expected to issue a notice to Delhi police asking them to file an FIR on the basis of Kaur's complaint.

DCW Chief Swati Maliwal, while addressing the media , said that it was shameful that a martyr's daughter has received rape threats. "We have written a letter and I have personally spoken to Delhi Commissioner over the phone. We request Delhi police to file a complaint and take a stern action against those who troll and abuse on social media," she said.

Kaur asserted that her campaign is aimed at raising voice against organizations, which challenge the law of the land and try to curb the fundamental right of 'freedom of speech'. She had taken the ABVP on Facebook and twitter
by posting pictures of herself holding up a placard that read, "I am a student from Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me. #StudentsAgainstABVP."

Gurmehar further said that she has received threats on various platforms."But i will not get scared because I know I am standing for the right. And it does not matter to me that you are an organization which is in power, no one can tell tat I should be scared," she added.

Following the post, Kaur received abuse and threats on social media, including rape threats made against her by the alleged ABVP supporters. On Monday, several celebrities including cricketer Virentra Sehwag an actor Randeep Hooda attacked on social media.

Union Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju also jumped into the debate and tweeted, "Who's polluting this young girl's mind?A strong Arm Force prevents a war. India never attacked anyone but a weak India was always invaded."

Hooda hit out at Kaur, calling her a "pawn". Kaur hit back at Hooda saying, Political pawn? I can think. I dont support violence perpetuated on students? Is that wrong." Hooda in reply said; "I agree wth u its absolutely wrong..have a feeling it's not limited to that in interpretation."

The war of words did not end there."@RandeepHooda thanks a lot. Really sweet of you to encourage that hate I've been receiving. Makes me feel that I adore your work :)," Kaur tweeted.

Hooda hit back saying," @mehartweets Pls don't credit me with so much. Your peace video was good bt not humanitarian. That's the problem2 begin wit."

The 'peace video' that Hooda reffered to was a silent video Kaur posted last year. The video, which had her holding up a series of placards aimed at promoting peace between India and Pakistan, had gone viral last year. In one of the placards which she held up in the video said "Pakistan did not killed my dad, war killed him". Cricketer Virendra Sehwg, in an apparent dig at the video, posted a video of himself holding up a placard reading, "I didn't score two triple centuries, my bad did."

While Kur was being bombarded with social media abuse, she also received support from many quarters including senior journalists and Aam Aadmi Party Chief Arvind Kejriwal. The Chief Minister posted a video of Kaur claiming she had received death threats and said, "Just listen to this. THIS is BJP. They will destroy our country. Everyone must rise against their goondaism."

Kejriwal also quoted a tweet by Kaur that said, "You can question my love for this country but yoe cannot define it for me, I serve this country and ITS YOUNG STUDENTS," and added a comment of his own,"Proud of u Gurmehar."

Later, speaking to the media, Kaur said, "I came to know that my friends were assaulted and given rape threats. no students orgnisation has the right to say all this. We will not take this nonsense. My friends have been pelted with stones. I love this country and I am not frightened of anyone. I have got these threats many times."
