Dhanbad: Former Deputy mayor of Dhanbad Neeraj Singh and three others died on Tuesday in an apparent shootout that look place in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand.
The three others, identified as Neeraj Singh's bodyguard, driver and his close aide Ashok Yadav died on the spot. The assailants had opened fire from the front, and fled thereafter. His aides died on the spot. Singh died soon after he was taken to the nearby Central Hospital.
Singh was on his way back home when the incident took place, family members and supporters of Neeraj Singh, was a Congress leader and unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Jharkhand Assembly elections from Jharia seat in Dhanbad district, blamed the police and administration for lapses. Outside the hospital, a large, agitating crowd began protesting, and the police had a tough time controlling them.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the sharpshooters allegedly started firing on Neeraj Singh's vehicle near Steel gate in Dhanbad.
It is suspected that an AK-47 was used in the firing. More than 20 bullet marks were found on Neeraj Singh's vehicle.
Hitting out at the Jharkhand government, Bihar's deputy Chief Minister Tejaswini Yadav said that the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) was 'sponsoring' criminals in the state.
Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das directed the state Director General of Police to ensure that the investigation is carried out quickly.
