Gopal Krishana Gandhi to be Opposition partys candidate for vice-president election

New Delhi: Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Gopal Krishna Gandhi has came up as Opposition party's candidate choice for the chair of Vice President election on Tuesday.

He was earlier expected to be in the race for Opposition's presidential candidate list until Congress pushed a Dalit, Meira Kumari.

The decision was taken today at the meeting of Congress and other major Opposition parties in New Delhi to decide on their vice-pesidential candidate.

The meeting of the 18 Opposition parties begin at Parliament Library on Monday, observing two-minute silence in respect of seven Amarnaath Yatra pilgrims killed in Mondays terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, vice-president Rahul Gandhi, firmer Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress Perlimentary party leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nbi Azad were present at the meeting.

The Janata Dal-United backing NDA nominee Ram Nath Kvoind for the July 17 pesidential elelction, joined the Opposition conclave represented by senior leader Sharad Yadav. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his belegured ally, Lalu Prasad, skipped the meeting.

Also, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Janata Dal-Secular leader and former Prime Minister HD Deva Giowda, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Misister Omar Abdullah, BSP leader Satish Mishra, Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal, Rashtriya Lok Dal Ajit Singh, Nationalust Congress Party's Praful Patel, CPI's D Raja and Trinamool Congress Derek O'Berin were also present.

The last date for filing nomination for the vice-presidential election is July 18, while scrutiny of nomination papers will be on July 19, respectively. The last date for withdrawing of nomination is on July 21.

However, the ruling BJP government is expected to declare its nominee by July 13.
