Not allowed to meet Aditynath over debt, man tried to set himself ablaze

New Delhi: Dealing with a debt of Rs. 2.5 lakh over medical treatment and a worsening health condition, a man tried to immolate himself at the Gorakhnath temple premises in Uttar Pradesh's Goarakhpuron Sunday after security personnel did not allowed him to meet chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

Rajkumar Bhatia is a resident of Rajpur Devri in Bhallia district, poured petrol on himself and tried to set himself afire during a programme attended by the CM, Police said.

However, he was caught by the people present at the site, including mediapersons. He was detained by the police later, who took them to a nearby police station.

Bharti said he wanted assistance from the chief minister.

"I am in the grip of a disease and have spent a large amount of money on its treatment. I come from Ballia to seek help from Adityanath," he told reporters.

"When I was not allowed to meet the CM, I thought suicide was the only way out, the state government should take provide some assistance to my family…, " he said.

A letter was also found in his possession in which he said he had taken a private loan of Rs. 2.5 lakh for his medical treatment and was not getting any help from anywhere to repay it.

"Nobody is there to listen to my plea. I am under a huge debt and my health is deteriorating. I need help," a sobbing Bharti aid.

It was not immediately known if CM Adityanath took note of the man's request.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently said the new Uttar Pradesh government would take a decision on a loan waiver scheme for farmers of the state.
