New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi met senior CPI leader D Raja in a meeting on Monday as part of the Opposition's consultations to field a common candidate for the Presidential elections.
The half n hour meeting between the two leaders ended after an agreement that the Opposition should field a candidate acceptable to all non-NDA parties, said sources. Sonia and Raja also discussed the prevailing political situation and felt that there is an atmosphere of growing intolerance in the country."No names was taken," Raja said after the meeting.
While, Sonia Gandhi is also expected to meet RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and DMKs MK Stalin in the coming days.
Last week, she met Bjihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar and CPM general secretary Sitaraman Yechury."
However, CPM is not ready to field a political leader, as it belives that the Opposition should make "all efforts to try and forge unity of all secular parties... to ensure a non-RSS President".
