SC to Centre: verdict on plea seeking appointment of Lokpal

New Delhi: The Supreme Court reserved its order on a PIL seeking appointment of Lokpal on Tuesday, after the Center told the court that the appointment is not possible in the current scenario.

The petition signed by the NGO Common Cause has sought an appointment under the provision of the 2013 Lokpal Act. Noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan is appearing for the NGO in the case.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, during the previous hearing in the case, had informed the Supreme Court that a proposal amendment in Lokpal Bill is pending before Parliament and is likely to be taken up in March.

Appearing for the NGO, Bhushan said the Lokpal law has been passed after a long struggle but the government is doing nothing to make it functional. "Here is a law which was elected three years ago after a long battle. It is the duty of the government and the court to ensure that the law is enforced," Bhushan said.

Last year, in November 23, 2016 the apex court has asked the government that it must not allow the institution of Lokpal to become a 'dead letter'.

The top court questioned the Center about why the appointment has been pending since 2014 and asked the Attorney General Mukul Rohagi as to why the government dragged its feet when its comes to passing of the amendment which would have speeded up the process of appointment.
