Sushma Swaraj to African envoys - Attacks cannot be called racist before any probe

New Delhi: "The attack cannot be called racist before any probe" said External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today in a statement today issued by a group of African envoys, which called the recent attacks on African students in India "xenophobic and racial in nature".

"The Attack cannot be called racist before any probe is completed. We are committed to the safety of African students," Swaraj said Lok Sabha.

Sawaj also disapproved of the African envoys' allegation that the Indian government failed to take action against the offenders or took "sufficient or visible deterring measures" to avoid repeat of such incidents.

"You can't say our steps are inadequate. We are committed to ensuring the security of all foreigners in India," she said.

On the night of March 27, an African national was ambushed in Greater Noida, 40 km away from New Delhi, following the protests over the death of a class 12 student of a residential colony there due to drug overdose. Some people who were holding a candle-light vigil for the student attracted by the Nigerians, suspecting them as drug-peddlers.

The statement was issues after a meeting of envoys attended by representatives from 54 countries of the African-continent- following the incident and dated March 31 said : "As regards the recent unfortunate incident in Greater Noida, the African Heads of Mission strongly condemn the incident and express their deep concern and also take note that these reprehensible events, both outstanding and unresolved cases against the Africans, were not sufficiently condemned by the Indian authorities. The meeting unanimously agreed that those reaccumulated attacks against Africans are xenophobic and racial in nature."

The African envoys also threatened to take the martyr to International human rights council for an independent investigation into the matter if the Indian government failed to take legal actions against the attackers.
