New Delhi: Independent MLA Bacchu Kadu from Maharastra has sparked a controversial statement on farmers, dragging Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP Hema Malini in to he row.
While referring to a statement made by the ruling benches that alcohol was one of the reasons behind farmer suicides, Kadu said Hema Malini drinks everyday but she does not commit suicide. "If drinking is the reason behind farmer suicide then there are many actors who drink daily. Doesn't Hema Malini drinks too? Why hasn't she committed suicide?" he asked.
Explaining this bizarre statement, Kadu further said that even the notion that farmers commit suicide due to burden of excess expenditure in marriage is also incorrect.
Continuing on the same tone, he described the bizarre explanation saying that should they wait and see if Union Minister Nitin Gadkari commits suicide after spending Rs. 4 crore on his son's wedding.
"All those reasons are nonsensical. Gadkari spent Rs. 4 crore in his sons wedding. So should we now wait for him to commit suicide?" he said.
Kadu further said that the real cause behind these suicides is lack of money.
"Professor Swaminathan always said that farmers' produce is increasing but not their income," he said.
Expressing distress over farmers suicide, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Tamil Nadu Government to file a detailed reply in the farmers' suicide issue in two weeks.
While, the apex court also lashed out at the government for not taking enough measures to prevent the farmers' suicide in the state.
An apex court headed by Justice Dipak Mishra said, "It is very painful to hear it that farmers are committing and the state government is not taking enough steps."
An NGO has m oved the apex court, pointed to the increasing cases of farmers' suicide.
