Sedition charge against actress turned congress politician Ramya

ramya@ Actress turned politician Ramya has been filed a sedition charged for her recent comment for praising pakistan and its people. Katnamane Vittal Gowda from Kodagu moved a court in Somwarpet, appalled by the 33-year-old Congress leaders counter to defence minister Manohar Parrikars controversial statement that going to Pakistan is like going to hell. Ramya, who was a Lok Sabha member from Mandya in the state for a year from 2013, visited Islamabad last week for a meeting of young parliamentarians from the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) nations. On her return to India after the August 16-18 summit, she said, Pakistan is not hell; people there are just like us. They treated us very well. Judge Shyam Prakash of the Somwarpet court near Madikeri will on August 27 hear the case registered under IPC sections 124(A), 344 and 511. Advocate Gowda is president of the Kodagu Praja Ranga president and a resident of Beluru village of that district. Karnataka is already in the middle of a debate over sedition following charges against Amnesty India. A Kashmir-related event the human-rights NGO held on August 13 saw a section of the participants chanting azadi (freedom). A case was filed, triggering fierce criticism against the states Congress government. A day after Independence Day, Parrikar addressed a gathering in Haryanas Rewari and said, Yesterday, our soldiers sent back five terrorists. Going to Pakistan is the same as going to hell. It was in response to this comment that Ramya is now facing a case. Unfazed, she has said, she will not apologise. I have done nothing wrong. India is a democracy. I am entitled to my views, she said. Political activists are attacking Ramya, who joined the Indian Youth Congress in 2011, as being anti-national. In the Amnesty India case, the sedition case was filed by Bengaluru police based on a complaint by the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, an organisation with strong links to the BJP. The police, on Friday, lathicharged a group of ABVP members who set alight an effigy outside of the human rights organisations offices in the state capital. Sedition has proved to be a divisive topic for the Congress party, with CM Siddaramaiah unable to rally his supporters around a common consensus on whether the presence of the archaic law is justifiable or not in a modern democracy.
