Kanpur:Hearing a PIL that challenged holding of IPL matches at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur on May 19 and 21, the Allahabad high court on Friday directed the state counsel to provide information in this connection.
PIL filed by Kanpur Jan Kalyan Sangh, a division bench comprising Justice Vimlesh Kumar Shukla and Justice U C Srivastava passed the above order after hearing both the sides and fixed May 16 as the next date of hearing.
The complainant took the plea that as there is a draught-like situation in Uttar Pradesh, allowing IPL matches to be held at Kanpur would not be proper.
Therefore, holding of matches should be stopped forthwith and the venue be shifted out of the state, the petitioner requested the court.
Representing the state government, the chief standing counsel opposed the PIL on the ground that only .22 MLD water was required for the stadium at Kanpur out of the 420 MLD available in Kanpur.
