Tahlka News Bureau

Lucknow: It's turning difficult for Lucknowites to breathe easy with an increase in the concentration of air pollutants over the past two years. Increased construction activity and addition of more than 1.5 lakh vehicles on city streets have led to increase in pollution.

The assessment of the ambient air quality of Lucknow conducted by the Indian Institute of Toxicology and Research reveals that, Indira Nagar and Chowk have the worst air with the maximum concentration of Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM or PM10).

The pre-monsoon monitoring was conducted at nine places around the city including the residential, commercial, and industrial areas. As compared to previous years, PM10 concentration has increased in all the four residential areas including Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar, Aliganj and Vikas Nagar.

Indira Nagar recorded the highest concentration of PM10 with 240.8 micrograms per cubic metre of air. This was followed by Gomti Nagar and Aliganj. The level recorded were two times more than the permissible limit of 100 micrograms per cubic of air in residential areas.
